THE QUICK TAKE

Ask each insurer to quote the same drivers, vehicles, coverage limits, deductibles and policy period. Resolve differences before treating the lower number as a saving.

Give every insurer the same starting point

The NAIC recommends providing the same information when requesting competing auto quotes. Gather vehicle details, how the vehicle is used, household drivers, and the coverage and limits you want. Use your current declarations page as a reference, while considering whether your circumstances have changed. NAIC auto insurance consumer guidance.

Keep a dated comparison note with one column per quote. Record whether each price is an estimate awaiting checks or an offer ready for you to review. If you correct mileage or add a driver in one application, correct the others before comparing the new prices. Accurate answers are more useful than a low initial estimate based on incomplete information.

Match the details behind the price

CompareWhat to record
Drivers and vehiclesThe same people, cars and usage assumptions.
Liability coverageEach limit shown in the proposal.
Other coveragesIncluded or excluded, with limits; ask about state-specific requirements.
Collision and comprehensiveWhether each is included and its separate deductible.
Optional benefitsRental reimbursement, roadside assistance and any other requested options.
Policy periodStart date, end date and total premium for that period.
Payments and discountsInstallments, fees, conditions and anything still subject to verification.

“Full coverage” is not a sufficient comparison description. Ask the agent to identify the actual coverages, limits and exclusions in writing. A lender or lease agreement may also affect what you need to maintain; check your own agreement rather than assuming a quote meets it.

Separate a price reduction from a coverage change

Suppose Quote A uses a larger collision deductible than Quote B. Its lower premium is not a like-for-like result. Request another version with matching deductibles, then compare. If you prefer the larger deductible, record that as a deliberate trade-off and consider how you would pay it after a covered loss.

Use the same approach for removed rental coverage, different limits or a discount tied to a driving-monitoring program. Ask what you must do to keep the quoted discount. Keep optional changes separate so you can see which part of the price difference comes from the insurer and which comes from a different policy.

Know what an online quote has actually completed

Some quote websites pass details to an agent, and some require follow-up before providing a rate or making coverage available. The NAIC advises requesting matching coverages and limits, and checking the insurer and agent with your state insurance department. NAIC: comparing online auto quotes.

A completed chat or referral is not proof of insurance. Ask who will issue the policy, what still needs verification and how you will receive the policy documents. If your driving history includes a conviction or claim, answer the insurer's actual questions accurately; a short chat question is not a universal rule about eligibility or price.

Questions before you switch

  • Is the final policy consistent with the quote I compared?
  • What is the confirmed effective date and time?
  • Do I have the required proof of coverage?
  • How will the old policy end, and are there any charges or refunds?
  • Who handles a claim, and how do I contact them?

Coordinate the dates with both insurers so you do not accidentally leave a gap. Keep the final documents, not just a screenshot of an attractive starting price. Our automated insurance chat can help you explore a partner option; it does not compare every insurer or bind a policy.
